I was putting away groceries when I heard a woman’s voice begin to scream. It was the kind of scream that scares women and makes the hair raise up on our necks. Men too. I was still for a moment wondering if i should get involved and I couldn’t stand it, so I ran out the front to the driveway and tried to look where the screaming was coming from. I thought she screamed No, No not you, no no and then the rest of the screams I heard loud and clear and it was a series of “No, No, No, get away from me, No, No, No, No, Oh No, Oh No, No No No No.” It was horrid, it became a sobbing, screaming, loud, and pleading” No, No, No. ”
I screamed out, “who’s there, who’s there”… small wait “who’s calling, who’s there”….small pause. The screaming stopped, just stopped. I yelled “I’m calling 911″. Who’s there?”. My helper Mateo came running from my lower horse pasture to find me. He had heard it too and was fearful something had happened to me. I was getting my cell phone. I called out some more, “who’s there? I’m calling 911”. We stood there together, helplessly looking and bewildered and afraid.
If Mateo hadn’t had heard it too, I would almost think I was crazy. The silence. Where was anyone. Other’s must have heard it too. As I sit here, it is like it didn’t happen. I feel a little sickened, and I have no idea what didn’t happen.
